Concept
This is a support or a visual help enabling to show entirely or partially the vulva and its different parts. It also enables to show, “visually”, some of the harmful consequences of the practice.
OBJECTIVES
This dummy aims at showing the different types of FGM and the consequences of it on external genital organs. This tool is used during demonstrations to raise awareness about some of the harmful consequences of FGM.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Before the demonstration:
- Clean the dummy if it is dirty
- Check if you have all its 8 parts
- Check if it is in good condition
- Check if it doesn’t have any manufacturing defect
- Use a table for the sake of the demonstration
During the demonstration
- Before displaying the dummy, explain to your audience what it represents and why you are going to use it
- Ask for the consent of the audience before unveiling the dummy (which is very important, especially when there are old people, religious people, women who have gone through difficult delivery, when the audience is mixed, etc.)
- After getting out the dummy, ensure that everybody sees it
- Show the dummy and follow the chronology
- Vulva of a non-mutilated woman
- Clitoridectomy
- Vulva of a mutilated woman (most average excision)
- Infibulated vulva (gravest)
- Vulva with keloids
- Childbirth for a non-mutilated woman
- Childbirth for a mutilated woman, with complications (perineum being ripped)
- Step by step, always check if it is well fixed before showing it, so that it will not fall out.
- Explain things loud enough
- Go around so that everybody can see
- Put the parts that have already been displayed back in the box step after step, to avoid confusion
Once that all parts have been presented and that the audience asks questions, do not go on with the dummy out of its box, to avoid some people focusing too much on it while you speak, causing a breakdown in communication.
GOOD TO KNOW
FGM are taboo: it is hard to talk about it, but also to show images related to it. During an activity, it can shock the audience. Be vigilant and attentive to their reactions. It is all about using it to go on in the demonstration and respect everybody, not to shock.
